Petcentric Press Release, November 2005
Caltrans Adopt-A-Highway Program
return to News page
Petcentric in April 2002 joined thousands of other Californian’s when they adopted a highway
in Santa Barbara, California. The two-mile stretch begins at Modoc road and Los Positas and goes up Cliff
Drive to Mesa Lane. Twelve times a year Petcentric volunteers clean both sides of this 4 1/4 mile stretch of area.
As of November 2005 they have estimated picking up 405 bags of litter!
Petcentric sitters typically clean the highway on the last Saturday morning of each month. It
usually takes about an hour depending on the number of volunteers. If you are interested in taking part
please contact Wendy Fisher.
The Caltrans Adopt-A-Highway Program provides an avenue for individuals, organizations, or
businesses to help maintain sections of roadside within California's State Highway System. Groups have the
option to participate as volunteers or to hire a maintenance service provider to perform the work on their behalf.

The Adopt-A-Highway program, which began in 1989, has been one of the most successful
government-public partnerships of our time. Since 1989 more than 120,000 Californians have kept over 15,000
shoulder-miles of roadside clean.
Participation can include one or more of the following activities:
• Removing litter
• Planting trees and/or wildflowers.
• Removing graffiti
• Controlling vegetation
Adoptions usually span a two-mile stretch of roadside and permits are issued for five-year
periods. Groups may apply for additional, five-year permits. Visit http://adopt-a-highway.dot.ca.gov/ to learn how you can adopt a highway!
